Re-Up Gang: Blowin' Up The Spot

By Alvin "aqua" Blanco
Call them the Fantastic Four. Except, their superpowers were not the result of cosmic radiation but a byproduct of a appreciation for the fundamentals of Hip-Hop lyricism; wordplay and delivery. Composed of VA’s Malice and Pusha T of the Clipse and Philly brethren Ab-Liva (formerly of Major Figgas) and Sandman, this fearsome foursome call themselves the Re-Up Gang.
Riding a Pyrex and powder laced pair of critically acclaimed albums (Lord Willin’ (2002), Hell Hath No Fury (2006)) and a rep bolstered by staggeringly potent volumes of their We Got It for Cheap mixtaptes—the latest being Vol 3: The Spirit of Competition—the Re-Up Gang is motivated by a love of creating dope rap music. No pun intended. Now rolling with Columbia Records in 50/50 joint venture for their Re-Up Gang Records, Pusha, Malice, Ab-Liva and Sandman spoke in depth about everything from the beef with that guy from New Orleans to being independently major to their exasperation with former home Jive on down to how they are their own greatest inspiration.
AllHipHop.com: Alright, so Volume 3's been out. How's the feedback been?
Malice: It's real good, it's been a long time coming. A lot of people have been waitin' for Volume 3. A lot of success on Volume 2, Volume 1 also was hot and the feedback we get is everyone saying Volume 3 definitely lived up to, if not exceeded Volume 2, so we're happy with that.
AllHipHop.com: Obviously you were aware of the success of Volume 2, is that part of the reason why it took a little longer to drop Volume 3?
Pusha-T: Yeah, we had all intentions, with all the albums that were dropping, to come out a little earlier because the whole theme and the whole premise behind Volume 3 was “the spirit of competition.” So we was goin' to take all the albums that dropped — Jay, Kanye — everybody who was supposed to drop but didn't drop - take all their beats and black out on them. That was what it was supposed to be, but a lot of albums came out and the beats weren't there. So we were like, “Damn, what are we goin' do?” So then we had to go back to diggin’ in the crates and finding the "Scenario 2000" record and going back to "Rainy Dayz." We were doing this s**t off of inspiration; like the records that inspired us and so on and so forth. Hopefully hoping we were going to get inspiration from the joints that did drop, but didn't.

Clipse Talk Play Cloths To Allhiphop.com
Fans of Hip-Hop inspired fashions may get a glimpse at the Clipse's new label Play Cloths as early as this summer, the rappers told AllHipHop.com. The line, which was originally scheduled to preview at the February edition of the Magic Marketplace Fashion and Apparel Trade Show in Las Vegas, will now make it's debut at the Show in late August.
"Right now it's in the development stages," Malice told AllHipHop.com. "We just left Magic in Vegas, I think we'll be showing at Magic in August." First announced in late December, an official description of the line defines it as having a classic style, specifically designed with a rare urban appeal.
It is said to be a "blend of American style, with the French Riviera and Monte Carlo uses of rich, vibrant primary colors to create collectible garments." The new clothing line, created with the help of designer Doug Life, is inspired by a time when the most wanted fashion pieces were not accessible to the everyday fan, Malice explains.

We Got It For FREE!
If nothing else, the Clipse are loyal. They’re giving back, repaying the legions of fans who rode for them during their much-ballyhooed label labyrinth. How so? By making available Volume 3 of their lauded We Got it 4 Cheap mixtape…FREE. February 5, 2008, at 11pm EST, log onto www.reupgangrecords.net to download the latest installment by the fearsome foursome: the Clipse—brothers Pusha T and Malice—and Philly MC’s Ab-Liva and Sandman.
Volume 3, entitled the Spirit of Competition, reflects the Clipse’ resurgence in an otherwise stagnant game. It bridges the gap until the Re-Up Gang’s official release on Sony/Columbia Records, due in summer 08. To up the ante, fans can download either of two versions: one that’s solely music, and another hosted by blockheater DJ Drama. The tape sans Drama was previously streamed via the Re-Up website, but come Tuesday night, fans can visit www.reupgangrecords.net and actually download We Got it 4 Cheap entirely free of charge.
Also, at 11pm EST, the Clipse will be announcing a NEW contest! Stay tuned...

Clipse Officially Launch Play Cloths Clothing Line
Clipse, the Virginia Beach-based rap group whose 2006 album, “Hell Hath No Fury,” ended up on several critics’ best-of-the-year lists, is venturing into a new domain: fashion. The sibling duo Pusha T. and Malice, have officially launched a line called Play Cloths.
Clipse, who plan to release an album next summer, said they’ll promote the clothing line at the fashion trade show Magic in Las Vegas in February. Pusha declined to comment on price, but said Play Cloths will only be carried at select boutiques. That’s the same strategy used by their friend and producer Pharrell Williams of Virginia Beach, who oversees the lines Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream.
Williams and Clipse cemented their reputations as trendsetters after they almost single-handedly imported and popularized the Japanese cult clothing brand A Bathing Ape. Clipse copycats became so ubiquitous that their armies of “Mini-mes” inspired the group to write a song, “Mr. Me Too.”
The Clipse Move To Sony Records
Platinum-selling rap duo the Clipse have inked a deal with Rick Rubin at Sony/Columbia Records. The move cements Columbia 's commitment to a growing urban music roster that includes global phenoms Beyoncé, Prince and Three 6 Mafia. Under the legendary auspices of Rubin, who personally sanctioned the deal, and the fittingly-named A&R rep Hip-Hop--think Jay-Z, Kanye West, —the Clipse are poised to deliver a lethal dose of their ironic, intoxicating mix of metaphor and message."I been a fan of the Clipse since I first heard them," asserts Hip-Hop. "And I ain't a fan of too many things. Every song they come with it, lyrically. They were on a real short list when I got to Sony; I was going all the way to make this happen. We trying to be more of an artist-friendly company, and focus on artists we really love. I liked them three years ago, I liked them yesterday, and I feel like they can be a group with a future."
The Clipse, brothers Pusha T and Malice, first assaulted radio in 2002 with their platinum debut, Lord Willin'. In late 2006, they dropped the devilishly dark, critically vaunted Hell Hath No Fury. And all the while they stayed grindin' on the mixtape circuit, churning out volumes of the heralded We Got It 4 Cheap series. But now, the takeover is official. Their multimillion-dollar, 5-year contract with Columbia is rare given the stingy state of the industry. And it accommodates not only forthcoming Clipse albums, but also solo efforts from each brother, and collective recordings with co-conspiratorial MCs Ab-Liva and Sandman. Together, the foursome comprises the Re-Up Gang. In fact, a Re-Up release is first on the slate, aimed for March '08. The Clipse will follow come summer.
"There were several deals on the table, but only one label stepped up to the plate; that was Rick Rubin and Hip-Hop," confirms group manager Tony Draper, who along with attorney Tim Mandelbaum structured the contract. "The Clipse are in a position now where you have to establish them with their own lane, give them the opportunity to build their own entity. Hip-Hop and Rick saw the movement before we ever sold a record for Sony. They didn't make a single commitment, they made the whole commitment."
That commitment, germinated from mutual respect, was consummated in the boardroom; the Re-Up Gang will enjoy 50/50 profit sharing with Columbia for the RE-UP GANG , and will retain ownership of their masters come the deal's conclusion. And with business properly handled, the Clipse can focus on their art, not their arithmetic. From Malice: "The key thing about our music, and what I'm most proud of, is the integrity. We really sit down and try to come up with good verses that'll provide some kind of food for thought. It's passionate music—deep, heartfelt, and authentic to what we do. It's very personal, and there's a connection between us and our fans. If you like the Clipse, it's because you've taken time to delve into what it is we do."
Says Pusha T about the relationship with Sony: "The Clipse represent everything that we've all known Rick Rubin to represent: hip-hop in its purest form. To know that the head guy is a creative guy as well, that makes me feel good. I come from being surrounded by creativity. And I felt like in going forward, I wanted to be able to put out as much music as I wanted to. That was my goal. That's been the one thing that's hindered the Clipse. And Sony's allowing us to do that." (Press Release)

Re-Up Gang Records Presents: We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 1 & 2
"Volume 1 prepares listeners for what they’re about to hear. Liva delivers a line that basically summarizes the We Got It 4 Cheap ethos: “Liva the hustler, still in my glory and / Cocaine pusher, doors up, I’m DeLorean.” “Coast to Coast” has the four main characters rattling off only a few bars at a time, and the slight change in approach leaves it as one of the best tracks on the first tape."
